Modern family tents offer privacy, space and creature comforts.

Before you buy
View the tent pitched – it may be your regular campground doesn’t provide sites big enough to accommodate it. You’ll also want to check it offers enough space for your family, especially on days when the weather makes going outside impossible.

Fabric
The most expensive models will be made from canvas which can resist harsh UV light and heavy downpours. Nylon fabric is cheaper and lighter but may not have the life expectancy of a canvas tent.

Floors
These need to be super tough and should offer a 10,000mm waterhead rating.

Windows
These are typically clear PVC and can be opened to promote airflow. Most have a mosquito-proof privacy mesh backing to keep bugs out and allow you to change without passersby seeing in. Some windows can be poled out to create extra shade.

Extras
When you’re using the tent as a home away from home for two or three weeks at a time, you need to consider its features. A high ceiling is a must, but other optional extras could include built-in wardrobes, multiple entrances, access for power cords and
awnings.

Poles
Most poles are aluminium or steel, though some tents use fibreglass and some have an inflatable airframe.

Guylines
Due to their height and weight, it is essential to use guylines. There will be multiple guyline attachment points around the tent, some attaching to the poles that support the awning or shade.

Zips
Look for heavy-duty zippers that can withstand frequent use. They should be easy to use for young children as well as adults.
