Bridgedale releases waterproof socks

Outdoor sock brand Bridgedale has introduced its first fully waterproof sock range. Developed to provide wet-weather protection and day-long comfort, the Storm Sock range has been designed to perform in the wettest conditions when hiking, biking or running.

The big question is whether there is a market for waterproof socks among outdoor enthusiasts. Nic Burgess from Ampro Sales, the New Zealand distributor of Bridgedale, is upbeat: “The benefits are certainly there and looking at the shortcomings of the current waterproof socks on the market, where some models are barely even shaped like a sock, versus the quality and comparably favourable price of Bridgedale, I suspect we could be on to a winner here.”

To achieve complete waterproofness, the Storm Sock has three parts:

1. Inner Sock

The next-to-the-skin inner sock, made from up to 60 per cent merino wool, is combined with synthetic fibres to move moisture (i.e. sweat) from the skin’s surface. The lining features a terry loop underfoot cushion that extends around both the toes and over the heel to ensure comfortable feet in wet conditions.

According to Burgess, this is a unique selling point: “It’s important to let your feet breath – especially if you’re perspiring – so they don’t cook.”

2. HydroTech membrane

This waterproof and breathable high stretch prevents water from entering through the sock. Bridgedale says, “after a three-year rigorous testing period” it can “confidently guarantee” the following specifications for the HydroTech membrane:

  • Membrane breathability: moisture permeability >12,000mg
  • Membrane waterproofness: Hydrostatic head >8000mm

In keeping your feet dry you’re also removing a leading cause of blisters,” said Burgess.

3. Outer Sock

The nylon outer protects against abrasion from footwear. Lycra inserts prevent the sock falling down during activity.

The Storm Sock comes in three weights:

Lightweight $69.99

Close fitting and designed for activities where maximum breathability and minimum insulation is required, such as mountain biking and trail running.

Midweight $74.99

With a terry cushioned footbed and ankle, this sock is for outdoor activities like hiking and mountaineering where warmth and breathability are required.

Heavyweight $84.99

This sock has full terry cushioning throughout and is designed for cold weather activities such as winter walking, hiking and biking.
