First published in 1991, Wilderness has long been the magazine of the New Zealand outdoors. Covering tramping, camping, packrafting, climbing and more, it has recorded the unique outdoor culture found on these islands.
The print edition of Wilderness is produced 10 times a year, with a double issue in January/February and another in July/August. Each issue chronicles the New Zealand outdoors in all its forms, though there is a particular focus on tramping.
The magazine struck a cord with readers and advertisers from its very first issue, with some of those original readers and advertisers still with Wilderness today. It’s been a fascinating journey as tramping, hiking and exploring the great New Zealand outdoors has grown to be among the most popular pastimes in New Zealand. Wilderness has grown too – in acceptance and credibility among readers and those in the outdoor industry.
In 2021, Wilderness launched the Walk1200km challenge in an effort to increase its appeal among more casual walkers. The challenge has grown to around 7200 participants in 2025.
