Walkers can now reach popular Packhorse Hut, perched overlooking the rolling hills of Banks Peninsula, via a new track on Tūpari Reserve.

Developed by the Mikimiki Conservation Trust and crafted by volunteers, the single-file Tūpari Reserve Packhorse Hut Track was designed with the contours and gradients of the land in mind.

“You get the best views, it’s not too steep, and you get as much bush cover as possible,” said managing trustee Megan Reynolds.

After 30 minutes of climbing, walkers are met with an impressive view down Kaituna Valley at Pete’s Memorial (Peter Barrett was the former landowner). “This is where you get your breath back,” Reynolds said.

The original Kaituna Valley Packhorse Hut Track, one of Christchurch’s most popular trips, follows a 4WD track. Both tracks end at Packhorse Hut, which is popular with families as an overnight trip with young children.
