The Department of Conservation has dismissed a rumour that hut intention books are to be phased out. These vital tools for search and rescue teams will continue to be replaced as they become full or worn out.
A member of the Facebook group Tramping in New Zealand recently posted a message saying they had met a DOC ranger who claimed the department is phasing out the dark green intention book. The post received almost 90 comments.
An intention book provides a simple, reliable place for people to update their plans. This is especially important in remote areas where conditions can change quickly due to weather, track conditions, health issues or group decisions.
“Intention books play an important role in helping people enjoy the backcountry safely,” visitor safety and standards manager Andy Roberts said. “They allow trampers and hunters to record their plans, note changes to those plans, and leave information that can be critical if they are overdue or need help.”
“Intention books are one part of a wider safety system and remain a valued and practical tool in the backcountry,” Roberts said.
