After gaining permission to cross Mesopotamia Station, follow the farm track to the slope slightly south of Mt Sinclair (2065m) and then head straight up.

The views over the Rangitata should take your mind off the unrelenting climb on an unmarked yet technically easy tussock slope. Pick the line that looks easiest.

The tarn should be reached in around 4hr and camping is possible next to the water’s edge. Those who started out early enough might have time left in the day to climb Sinclair.

Return the same way, or an alternate route as shown with this route down a scree slope.
