The first section of the walk passes through impressive red beech forest but before long follows the perimeter of a fence line.
Once past the farm, a short muddy section is negotiated before entering Robinson Valley.
Set off up the true right of the Robinson until the first swingbridge takes you to the true left.
The track is often hard to follow so if the weather is good and the river is not running high, it can be easier to hike up the open river flats. The track can be rejoined at various places, such as where the valley narrows as a spur from where Mt Hochstetter meets the river.
Some sections of the track may be affected by windfall – forcing you back onto the river flats in places. Eventually you will break out into a cleaing from where Mid Robinson Hut can be seen on the opposite side of a swingbridge.
It’s not a particularly popular spot but the hut is in good condition and it makes for an ideal year-round weekend tramp. The Robinson Valley is also a safe option in wet weather because there are only small side creeks to cross.
