Strike out up the hill to Longview Hut and then continue along the ridge past Rocky Knob and pt1174 until the track junction near pt1164.

Drop down Makaretu Hut. Stay the night or continue on the long day trip back to the car park up the Makaretu River North Branch, via Awatere Hut.

The alternative direct route to the hut along Makaretu River North Branch is 8.4km and should take 4-5hr.
