Lake Matiri offers trampers, particularly those with families, a welcome retreat in the heart of Kahurangi National Park.

A steady climb through regenerating bush leads to the six-bunk hut on the shores of the lake.

The hut makes an ideal base for longer trips in the area or for simply exploring the beech forest and pebble banks that surround the lake.

Keep a beady eye out for glimpses of the additional lakelets created further up the valley by the 1929 Murchison earthquake.
