This tramps leads into the headwaters of the Mangatainoka River along a densely forested track that has a deep-forest feel to it. The bush here is lush and the Mangatainoka an energising river to spend time beside.

There’s one grunty 350m climb to reach the tops and from there you can take the right-branching track to Herepai. The track to the left leads to Roaring Stag Hut.
