An easy trip with barely 100m height gain over 6km. The track is in generally good condition with tree roots keeping concentration levels up. From the hut you can take a one-hour side trip to Lake Rakatu, two-kilometres long and surrounded by beech forest. Walk back out the way you came, or take Back Valley Track to Hope Arm Hut on the shore of Lake Manapouri before heading to the Mararoa River again.
