The world’s biggest outdoor expo closed in Germany this week after 900 exhibitors from 40 countries showed off more than 1000 brands in an exhibition space approximately 85,000m² in size –about the same size as 12 rugby fields.
In its 19th year, the 2012 OutDoorShow held in Friedrichshafen, Germany attracts all the big names in the outdoor industry including New Zealand’s own Icebreaker and Macpac.
The four day trade show, with 12 halls and open air grounds, also offered its own trail running course, a slackline and high ropes course, flying fox, a climbing wall, movie nights and an outdoor party.
The show’s outdoor tent city alone was 10,000m².
Here are some of the novelty products featured at the show that we thought strange, unusual or downright cool.
BioLite Camp Stove
Tired of cooking with gas or spirits? How about throwing a bit of wood into the mix and capturing the energy to charge your mobile or LED? BioLite develops and manufactures advanced energy products that it claims makes cooking with wood as clean, safe and easy as modern fuels while also providing electricity to charge cell phones and LED lights off-grid.

Calibre8 Scrubba Washbag
Smelling like a caveman is a lot worse than looking like one so do your fellow party members a favour and wash that funky shirt with this light and nifty revolutionised tramping washboard. Weighing only 160g, you just add clothing and washing liquid, seal the bag, rub the clothing against the internal washboard for 20-30 seconds then open the bag and rinse the clothing.

Cascade Designs Sleeping bag Therm-a-Rest Antares
Sleeping well is a necessity for being a happy camper. Slipping off your sleeping mat and waking up cold is a sure way of getting up on the wrong side of reality. Cascade Designs has a solution. Its patent-pending SynergyLink connectors join sleeping bag and mat, allowing movement while eliminating sliding, twisting and cold spots.

Cascade Designs Waterfilter System Platy GravityWorks 2L
With no squeezing or pumping required, this microfilter system is lightweight, compact and fast - filtering over 1L of water in 1 minute. It can filter into nearly any bottle or reservoir system with included accessories.

Climblock Rotor climbing machine
If you’re a rock climber with a big backyard, basement and a bucket of cash check out this climbing machine.
Climblock reckons high walls are not needed anymore, because the circumference of the "Rotor" is 12m allowing you to decide when to stop or to combine routes. You can choose your speed accordingly to your level. The machine allows you to train endurance, power, and speed all in one.

Fjällräven Akka View
How about a room with a view next time you're camping in paradise? Akka View 2 is a lightweight tent, designed for the warmer months of the year with vestibules that open up entirely, on both sides, letting in the views and the morning breeze without having to worry about mosquitoes and sand-flies.

Go Travel Speaker Case
Nothing too fancy here, but certainly small, light, efficient and handy. Featuring an audio boosting amplifier for better sound quality, the Speaker Case works with most MP3 players. Either zip your device securely inside the case, where a touch screen can be operated via the clear rear window, or use the integrated pop-out stand to turn it into a mobile music station.

GSI Outdoors Highland Flasks
If you like a quiet tipple at the end of a long day tramping, this lightweight Highland Flask means you can leave that heavy hip flask at home. Available in 250ml and 750ml sizes, an additional layer of foil adds insulation and extra UV protection.

Klymit Ulaar Jacket
If inflatable mats can provide warmth, what about inflatable jackets? Klymit did the research and has come up with an inflatable jacket which allows the wearer to control the amount of insulation with the push of a button. The Ulaar is the first shell featuring Nobletek’s adjustable warmth and boasts a four way stretch external fabric, and an activated charcoal bamboo carbon liner. No batteries required.
