After a night of heavy snow, I left Balloon Hut in Kahurangi National Park in predawn darkness.
There was no moon to light the trail, just the stars and my headlamp. The only sound was the creaking of snow beneath my feet. The beam of my headlamp lit just a few metres of the trail, which was at times completely indiscernible and at others appearing as a hollowed line in a universe of whiteness.
